THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORT COQUITLAM C ¢ UJ N C | [ / MAY 3 1 1982 TO: B. Kirk, May 26, 1982 City Administrator FROM: F.E. Peters, City Engineer SUBJECT: Traffic on Davies Avenue - Public Works Committee, May 25, RECOMMENDATION: That turn controls not. be installed for Davies Avenue traffic but that local traffic only signs be erected at Davies and Westwood and Hastings at Lougheed Highway. Also recommended that a sidewalk fer Davies Avenue be considered in the 1983 Budget. BACKGROUND AND COMMENTS: Several complaints regarding the short-cutting traffic on Hastings and Davies Avenue have been received in the past year. The latest request from Mr. Heath of 2721 Davies Avenue was to close Davies Avenue east of Raleigh Street or to eliminat left turns from the highway onto Hastings and right turns from Westwood onto Davies. Mr. Heath was present at a Public Works Committee meeting and understands the problems relating to trying to control the traffic. A traffic count taken on Davies Avenue indicates about 3,000 vehicles per day using the road. This would be normal for a collector standard street. However, with some of the traffic using it being industrial traffic, the present standard of construction of Davies Avenue is not ap to the requirement for a collector road. One of the problems for resi- dents is the lack of a sidewalk which would allow them to get out of the way of the traffic. For a sidewalk to be constructed it would have to be considered in next year's budget. The volume of traffic using this street indicates that there must be some through traffic which is using it asa shortcut. If local traffic only signs are considered for Lobb Avenue, then they could also be considere or Davies and Hastings. a”. BE.E. Peters, P. Eng., vu City Engineer
