’ * "THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORT COQUITLAM MEMORANDUM Mayor and Council December 11, 1980 F.E. Peters, P. Eng., City Engineer Applications for Grants under Revenue Sharing Act For the past three years we have received grants from the Ministry of Transportation and’ Highways for construction of major roads within the City. I would presume that Council would once again wish to make application for grants for 1981. ‘This memo outlines possibilities which Council could consider. Unfortunately, to be eligible for grants, applications must, be in the office of the District Highways Manager not later than the 5th of January, 1981. Consequently, Council. will have to determine the projects they wish to consider in the remaining two Council meetings in December. The new Public Works Committee has -not had the benefit of discussing these projects because of the time factor. . The Provisional Budget contains only two projects which would be eligible for Revenue Sharing. The first is the construc- tion of the proposed East Bank Road between Marpole and Kingsway at a cost of $187,000.00, The othes project would be the widening and overlay of Prairie Avenue from Newberry Street to Cedar Drive at a total cost of $153,000.00. Although both of these projects would appear to be eligible under the conditions of the grant, it is possible that the Ministry may provide a grant towards only one project. Council could therefore apply for both projects and could designate a priority in case only one is to be approved. In addition to or instead of the two above projects which are in the Provisional Budget, Council could also consider alternative projects such as the construction of a portion of Broadway Street or Coast Meridian Street, both of which also require the construc- tion of major drainage works which are not sharable under the Revenue Sharing Act. ' Subject to approval by the Public Works Committea, I hope to bring to Council the possibility of reconstructing Kingsway between Broadway and the Mary Hill By-Pass as a secondary highway construction project, also with 50% sharing by the Department of Highways.
