Hastings Street In february, 1944, 19 Scandi-navians interested in forming a Club, met for the purpose of bunging the peoples of the five Scandinavian countries (Nor-way, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland and Finland), closer in contact with one another. It was a very disappointing turnout, consider-ing the number of Scandinavi-ans in the district. In spite of this, the small group decided to try and form one anyway and elected as president and secretary Messrs. H. Hornquist and I. Sundquist. These two worked exceedingly hard to lay and put into shape the foundation of this new venit ure. 'Although formed mainly for social reason, the Club is not entirely bent on pleasure. They have played an active part in community affairs. The first large project on their part was to furnish a room in the West Coast General Hospital. The plaque on, the door of one of the nicest rooms in the hospital proclaims this to all who visit it. The ladies have also sewn and donated clothing to the childrens ward. They have con-tributed annually to the Senior Citizens Fund, promoted by the local radio station CJAV at Christmas time. Money was raised to aid a polio victim — the child of one of our mem-bers. Last fall the Club was instrumental in aiding one of our ' senior members to obtain fare I to his native Sweden, where he wished to spend the declining years of his life. Our organiza-tion was one of the most faith-ful in keeping its pledge to the Memorial Center. During the “Forty-niners” celebrations last fall ( for the purpose of rais-ing funds for the new hospital), the male Scandinavians did their part by growing facial foliage and holding “Kanga-roo Court” and handing out fines to those less hardy indi-viduals who did not have either a beard or exemption button. The money for the majority of their ventures is raised by holding monthly Scandinavian dances. • They are looked forward to by all. The ladies are Port Ålberni, B. C ! active with their sewing circles and hold annual sales of hand-] work and home cooking. Another year is started and we hope we can continue in a like manner. With the coopera-tion of each and every member we will. — Evelyn Back. Gust. Wahlström var omtyckt av alla. Må han vila i frid! — Hans Solberg. — JOHNSON-LINJEN— W (R
