Riding along nearly all day, 1 arrived towards evening at my destination, the farm home where my mother had spent her childhood days. The cousins were overjoyed to see their cousin from America but everything was just like a dream. The mountains seemed to close me in. Living on the prai-rie for so many years had given my eyes a flair for open spaces. The green forest looked invit-ing, but I had to wait for the spring to . remo ve the ice and snow so I could get into its depths and find my own childhood home as my present abode was where mother had lived before she married the man she loved and had to move to a home muöh smaller and less prosperous. It held such sweet bus went on to another village across the valley» How small and insignificent a person felt among those tall, stately pines. The forest is kept very clean and free from under-brush. A green moss covers the ground and small rocks, re-minding one of a Brussel car-pet. A winding pathway led up joyed several of her books. This great woman, who won the Nobel prize for literature, died in 1940 at the ripe old age of 85, beloved by all the world. It has been said that to win the love of children is to achieve im-mortality, and surely then Selma Lagerlöf achieved immor-tality for her delightful and fanciful. yet authentic, geogra-phy of Sweden, “The Wonder-ful Adventures of Nils Holgerson”. Her magnificent home is kept the hillside. I had walked when I heard a for some time chorus of tink- ling bells. The echoes made a wierd stränge sound. I wonder-ed for a minute if my trolls or pixies from the nearby mountain had tumed out in a body to welcome me, but the next moment I saw a hundred or more sheeps grazing on the hillside. The sight was a familiar one. I said “Sh”, like I used to when I was a child, and memories of a happy childhood j this sea of wool rolled in waves with loving parents and a num- down through the bushes into the ravine. I heard many fam-with ' iliar sounds — the birds and ber of sisters and brothers with minds brimming over imagination, against a back-ground of deep green forests, cliffs and rivers where lurked trolls, mermaids and other creatur&s, common in Nordic sagas. The first days in my home-land were spent in a round of “teas” then of course we drank coffee. Everybody wanted to see the American “lady”. Al-though rationed strictly on nearly everything, they still had coffee tables laden with tasty cakes, cookies and the coffee-rolls so famous over there. I aceused them of hav-ing to go without after one of these “sprees”, but sured me that such the case. In their friendly they showed me all they as-was not manner, their ac- complishments of the past win-ter'in the line of weaving, knit-ting and sewing. I was so much impressed but not surprised as I had previous knowledge of the industrious spirit of the Swedish housewife. Before I knew it, the spring had arrived. The rivers groan-ed as the shook off their win-ter fetters. Ice loosened at the edges of the lakes and water the söushing wtind in the fir trees, but at last I was in the clearing. I saw it all, before my very eyes, the gate, the stone walk by the well, the birch trees, old and gnarled, showing the century mark. Over by the house were the same apple trees. The house was new, worse luck. I would’ rather have had the old one. The big rock with the red and green moss on it was still there though. The big birch spoke first: “Well,” it seemed to say, “you made quite a stay. How are all the rest of the boys and girls who used to swing on niy branches?” I felt a pain of loneliness in my heart for them but I was ispared an answer as a dog came from around the comer barking and soon a kind- faced bade heard She lunch woman came but and me welcome. She had of my coming. invited me in and made for me. Then she told gurgled everywhere. Friendly old “Sol” felt ever so warm. The sky was very blue and fleecy white clouds sailed over the mountain tops. The numer- ous birds foremost waves to over. The all clamored for the place on the ether-send their own song days were getting so up as a museum. People come from all over the world to visit this place. Soon now, they told me, it will be safe to strife out and find my castle in the forest. I v^as patiently awaiting the day. The day had come. What a morning! The birches wore a light green, the leaves not quite full grown. The meadowlark was here, also the cuckoo bird. I was taking the bus to the foot of the mountain and would have to walk from there as the me to take possession of the farmatead as if I had never been away. “Look around, any-where and everywhere,” she said. I feasted my eyes on all the familiar things until near-ly bus time and I made many more and lenghtier visits to my castle in the forest. The countryside had by this time become an undisputable fairyland. The numerous fruit-trees, the lilac, the linden and many other trees were all in bloom. The water in the lakes was so still, the trees lining the shores made ghostly looking shadows in the water. OUR TRIP TO MÄRBACKA One day, several of my friends and myself hired a bus for a sightseeing trip. We trav-elled all around the great lake Fryken. We visited many places of interest on the way to Mår-backa, the home of the world famous authoress, Selma Lagerlöf. There were very large shade trees and hedges and flowers. A sign read “Lunch for Travellers”. We were met at the door by one of these kind, mild-eyed women we had become so ac-customed to meeting in this land. She informed us that the place was a vacation home for house-mothers but they sold lunches to help defray expences. She asked us to make our-selves at home and disappeared to the kitchen to give orders for our lunch. We looked at each other — this was indeed a surprise. A semester-home for housemoth-ers ? What next? A lady in Värmland’s national costume took us through the house and showed us the spotless bed-rooms that these women oc-cupied while there. I think they housed about 35 at one time. We talked to some of the women. One lady confined: “We don’t even know what we are going to have for dinner. We don’t have to do a thing, except make our own beds. I really feel a little lost,” sweet housemother, said this as she plucked apologetically at her sleeve with a hand that showed signs of hard work on the farm. Later we met the matron. She seemed a really remarkable woman. I asked her how this miracle institution had come into being, and if these homes were to be found all over the land. She said she didn’t think there were so many, as the idea was rather new, but she said it was a long story. I asked her to tell it to the gathering, which she did in a very interesting manner. Her husband is a member of parliament, so she is with him at the capitai in the winter. This matter abjut the house-inothers had been on her mind for some time, but the men had scoffed at the idea of any fin-ancial aid from the govemment, saying, “Why should the wom-en be encouraged to gad about and desert their duties ?” A man of course, would need to go to the mountains or sea-shore occasionally to shed the burden of the day. At last, she said, her feathers got ruffled over this talk and she faced the lot of them, witji the re-sult of an 80,000 kronor grant with which She purchased this fine property, which used to be a privately owned country estate. They still owed some on the deal but they get money from taxes each year for the upkeep as it was absolutely free to mothers. If ever they had a room to spare, it was easy to rent it to summer guests at the rate of fouv kronor per day. (To be continued) Filminspelning pågår i svensk högsommar. Filminspelningen i Sverige ।
