The number of cases of epi-demic diseases in Sweden has been quite low now for severai years. In 1947 there was a fur-ther decline. Registered cases of diphteria and infantile par-alysis — the two most danger-ous of the infectious diseases — were 14,442 in 1947 against 14,659 the year before, which is about one half of the aver-age annual number for the ten-year period 1936—1945. There were 11,205 cases of scariet fever reported, which is about one half of the average figurs for the above period. In 1947 there were 68 deaths from In-fantile paralysis, 18 from diphteria, and 7 from scariet fever. Sweden’s population is about 6,800,000. Gasoline rationing will be in-itroduced in Sweden within six weeks, or as soon as the author-ities have made the necessary arrangements. This was an-nounced on the radio by Gunnar Sträng. Minister of Supply. In order to prevent profiteering and hoarding, a government embargo was immediately plac-ed on gasoline. Retailers must limit sales to the capacity of the vehicle’s tank. When rationing begins, the consumer will receive a certain basic quota; those who can legitim-ately claim the need for more will get an extra ration. A New Type of Electric generator, with a capacity oi two million volts, has been con-structed by the Swedish De-fense Research Institute and is now being tested. It Is con-tained in an airtight cylinder, and is expected to cost more than some 16.000 kronor. This is less than the cost of other high tension generators, includ-ing cyclotrones. It is also reported that Chalmer Institure of Technology in Gothenburg has received a grant for the construction of a high tension generator which will have an estimated capacity of four co five million volts.
