Kersbackens samhälle i Leksand har plötsligt blivit helt utan vatten. Samtliga brunnar, 23 stycken, har tömts. Det är den oväntade följden av en större täckdikning genom byn på stort djup. Byborna, som hittills haft utmärkt vatten, måste nu köra vatten från en grannby. Vatten torde inte kunna tillföras byn på annat sätt än att vattenledning dras dit, vilket tar lång tid. Det gamla gruvkapelle: vid Gruvgårdens gruvor i Garpenberg, Dalarna, naller på att flyttas för att bereda plats för pågående utvidgningsarbe-ten vid industriområdet. Flyttningen av det stora kapellet, som väger 50 ton, sker med rui-lar. Den minnessten som restes 1942 över omkomna gruvarbetare i Garpenberg skall flyttas till kyrkogården. Sveriges fjärde station för radiotelefoni skall förläggas till Tingstäde, Gotland— de tre övriga stationerna finns i Stavsnäs, Malmö och Göteborg. Särskilt för Gotland blir den nya anläggningen, som beräknas vara klar efter nyår, av stor praktisk betydelse. Hundraårsjubileum firades nyligen av Gothems folkskola på Gotland i närvaro av så gott som hela socknens befolkning. Äldste ‘skolpojken’, 95-årige sjökapten N. O. Fredriksson höll ett litet tal och föredrog ett poem med anledning av jubileet. Skolan är unik sa till vida att den under sin tillvaro endast haft tre ordinarie folkskollärare. Den nuvarande läraren, Rudolf Carlson, har [tjänstgjort sedan 1921. Världens enda kvinnliga i fyrvaktare finns i Sverige, och heter Olivia Samuelsson, är nu 84 ar och har skött sin tyr . som en hel karl i 40 år tillsammans med sina bägge döttrar. Branca, Candidate for Park Commis-sioner, is a prominent City barläster and solicitor. “Branc” as he is more famili-ary known to a host of friends throughout the city was born at Mount Sicker, Vancouver Island, and was brought by his parents over 40 years ago to this city. Branca graduated from the Britannia High Schcol, and took his law degree at U.B.C. Always prominently identified with sport, he was presented with the J. Fyfe Smith Trophy, emblematic of the amateur middleweight boxing champion-ship in B.C. in 1934. One of the original members of the Hastings Community Association, he served as its first president. He also serveu a two-year term on the Vancouver Board of Park Commis-sioners, and on more than one occasion Mr. Rowe Holland, Ohairman of the present Board, which he has served on for 18 years, has been heard to remark, “I wish I had ‘Branc’ back on the Board”. * * * Gordon Hays of Gordon's Tire Service, 26-32 E. Hastings St., is a candidate for Parks Board. He is one of the best known and populär young business men in that part of the city. Gordon Hays was one of the charter mentbers of the Vancouver East Lions Club and has done yeomen service of that organization and its philan-thropic work. He is a member of the Junior Board of Trade and ran as an aldermanic can-didate with the Civic Action group two years ago. • • • Mrs. Margaret Duker, Candidate for School Board. Our “1947 Good Citizen” Mrs. Duker was born in Nova Seotia. raised in Boston by foster parents and has resided in Vancouver for 30 years. She is a member of the Marpole Auxil-iary to the Infirmary, Chil-dren’s Hospital, and Retary Anns. “Aunt Margaret” as she is affectionately known by most was the founder of the Crippled Children’s Hospital, now Chil- dren*s Hospital, and its president for three years. A gracious and charming lady with a ready smile and a keen sense of humor, she is known and loved by children and acjults in all parts of the city artd is ready and wulling to take up the duties of a school trustee. • • • Mrs. Jane Williams is a candidate for school trustee and resides at 1775 W. 10th Ave. She has resided in the City of Vancouver for 35 years. Mrs. Williams is Past President of the Women’s Auxiliary to the Canadian Merchant Service Guild. She is present President of the Welsh Musical Festival, and has been so for the past four years. Alfred George Neuert, is a candidate for the Board of School Trustees. He was bom in Listiwel, Ontario ann came to Vancouver. By profession he is a life underwriter, and has been wfth the Sun Life Insurance Company for the past 18 years. He is at the . present time Vice President of the Vancouver East Lions Club. This is a group of fifty-five young and middle age business men of Hastings and Grandview, and are known throughout the City as the real go-getter Service Club. They were chartered about four years ago, and dur-ing that short period of time have raised over $200,000 for charitable purposes. They made a gift of $80,000 to the Crip-pled Children’s Hospital, a large sum to the Children’s Solanum on Vancouver Island and also to St. Christopher’s Home in North Vancouver.
