Hastings PA 3557 Safety Depoöif Boxe? for Reni ■ Friends and readers of the Swedish Press have ön several occasions discussed the possi-bility that I should write some-thing about my traveis throughout Canada and Newfoundland, that would interest the read-ders. There is now less than three weeks since I was in your office. My inspection of Trans-Canada Airlines property has taken me to Edmonton, Calgary, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Swift Current and Regina since I left Vancouver. I am at present in Goose Bay, Labrador, the East coast of Newfoundland. This airport is the largest of any one in Canada and Newfoundland, it has all concrete runways, several large hangars of steel construction three power stations located near the airport, two water pumping stations, one is owned by the Canadian Government, and the other by U.S.A. This airport has its own radio station and all outside Communications are by radio only as there is no telegraph or tele-phone. The airport is located approximately a hundred miles from the open Atlantic. All heavy freight is shipped by small steamers entering Goose Bay, the dock is located some 2,000 yards from the buildings where I am now presently stay-ing as a guest at the Chateau Terrington. There are a good deal of activity around this airport, owing to the fact that there are several airlines stop-ping off for refueling, amongst them are American Airlines, La France Airlines, Dutch Airlines, Scandinavian Airlines, British Airlines and Trans-Ca-nada Airlines. At present T.C.A. is running some thirteen trips across the Atlantic a week. This airport also has first class hotel accom-modation. The U.S.A. has ap-proximately 750 airforce staff, the Canadian airforce around 300. There are possibly 200 civilians working at various jobs as maintenance of the airport. There are several Eskimos and Indian families living in a small village known as Happy Valley, along Hamilton River. This river is located some six miles north of the airport. The village looks very primitive, the houses are very small and made out of unpeeled spruce logs. One thing that may in-terest the readers is, that the ground for many miles around the airport is of a brownish fine sand, consequently there is very poor vegetation — only small spruce trees and a RES NU _few But ries, al so swamps near the airport. there are lots of blueber-wild cranberries (lingon), a lot of reindeer moss is Swedish Navy Receives Two Modern Cruisers Stockholm. — At the end of July the first of the two 7,400 tons cruisers ordered by the Swedish Navy ran her final trials on the Swedish West-coast. It was the cruiser “Tre Kronor”, which has been built by the Götaver-ken shipyard. The second unit of the same class, “Göta Lejon”, at present under comple-tion at the Eriksberg shipyard, Ls expected to be delivered in the next few months. These cruisers have a length of 180 meters (590 ft.) and a breadth of 16.5 meters (52 ft.) and are largely welded. They show many interestiing feat-ures, especially as regards the artillery equipment. The main armament consist of seven 152 mm. guns, 3 in a triple-turret on the foredeck and 4 aft in two double-turrets. I noticed in one of the yards — back of an Eski-mo house — were some pota-toes planted and the grass tops already frozen, also a pig was seen behind one of the houses. This was rather odd, because the Eskimos never have any animals than the dogs, and here was plenty of pigs, several behind each shack. Inquiring about the pigs I was informed that the American Airforce personal stationed there, had had several hundreds near the camps when the war was end-ed and maybe that the little pig-stork was lifted by the Eskimos, or possible, the stork made a mistake. I also noticed that many Eskimos wore old U.S. uniforms. The other day together with a couple of paint-ers, I went down to the Hamilton River, looking for lumber and fish and sitting by the river bank near the trees when I noticed some clothes laying near by and on closer investigation I found an U.S. airman’s cap, a tie, a canopener and a can of Ruppert’s beer unopened. These artides will be brought back to Winnipeg and kept as souvenirs. Fishing is very poor owing to the fact that the river bottom is all sand and fish enters this river only in spawning season. There Ls lake-trout and several other types of salt wat-er fish to be caught in Goose Bay. There is no moose or deer. I have been informed that a good deal of white fox and tim-ber wolves are around and also a few caribou can be found. I have seen several partridg- mm. AA guns. One of the prominent graveyards belongs to the aircraft and would be a good place for souvenir-hunters as a fellow could easily pick up a whole aircraft if he wanted to. There are Liberators, Lanks, Houtsons, keits of all descrip-tions. The weather out here is very much like fall, and I hear they have an average of about eight feet of snow during the winter. The heating plant has been go-ing for full blast the last ten days and last night I felt the cold more than ever as I hac the window open and had only two blänkets to cover me. About five o’clock in the morning I had to get up and close the window. Around 3 o’clock this afternoon we noticed a very dark and heavy cloud coming up and ten minutes later we had a storm over us, lifting sand and debris sky-high, and made the outside workers running for shelter. At present I have a few tradesmen repairing and redec-orating the T.C.A. staff-house. Tomorrow I am proceeding to Montreal and Moncton, N. B., where I intend to stop four : days, after I will retum to this j station via Montreal. i I am now closing this letter as well as the 40-mm. guns are all-automatic, and even the first mentioned can be used against aeroplanes. The loading as well as the pointing and aiming of the guns is entirely automat-ized, and the crew in the tur-rets are therefore merely re-quired as a stand-by. The modern fire-direction instruments always keep the guns pointed at the estimated hit point. The fire speed of these guns is claimed to be higher than that of previously used designs. It is estimated that seven of the 152-mm guns of the “Tre Kronor” equal about ten guns of the usual type. In all, this cruiser is able to deliver about six tons of shells per minute and over 20 aeroplanes can be taken under fire simultaneously. The ship is also equipped with two 53-cm triple-torpedo tubes as well as gear for the laying of mines, dropping of depth charg-es, etc. “Tre Kronor” is propelled by two steam turbines and the pro-pellars are made of stainless Steel. No figures have been re-leased about the speed, but it is reported that very satisfact-ory results were attained at the recent full speed trials. The fire fighting system is very extensive and includes ar-rangements for foam-spraying. Among other details released by the Swedish Naval author-ities may be mentioned that the ship is equipped with 350 elec-tric meters and that there are 322 telephones for the internal communication in addition to an electrically operated tube post system. The crew consists of about 620 officers and men. The “Tre Kronor” is the big-gest naval ship so far built by the Götaverken shipyard. For the building and equipment of the new cruisers Sweden has been able to rely entirely on her own resources, even most of the complicated fine - instruments being produced in the country. The guns and armour have been delivered by the well-known Bofors Ordnance Works, and the shipbuilding steel by the Domnarvet and Degerfors Steel works. The high speed steam turbines are of de Laval make, and the boilers from the Motala Verkstad, while other well - known Swedish firms, such as ASEA, the Ericson Co., and AGA have supplied the electrical equipment, the tele-phone and radio installations, instruments etc. These cruisers constitute a very considerable reinforce-ment of the Swredish Navy. During the war years no less than som 90 new units, most of them light ones, were added to the fleet. It consists at present of some 150 fighting ves-sels of various types, which means that it now has a strength which is greater than ever before in modern time. Clipped from the Lost-and-Found: “Found — bird or hat which flew or blew into Sam’s Service Station.
