The arrival of a Newfoundland delegation in Ottawa late in June, with the purpose of ascertaining a fair and equit-äble basis for the federal union of Newfoundland and Canada, has meant that the public at-tention is being closely focus-ed on the future status of the colony. Formerly a Dominion, the position of Newfoundland at the moment is that of a non-selfgoverning British col-ony. The six-man delegation de-rives its authority from the Newfoundland National Con-vention, which was set up by Imperial ordier-in-council o n December 11, 1945, so that its members might “discuss and consider among themselves as elected representatives of the Newfoundland people, the changes that have taken place in the financial and economic situation of the island since 1934 and, bearing in mind the extent to which the high re-venues of recent years have been due to wartime condi-tions, examine the position of the country, and make recom-mendations to His Majesty’s Government as to the possible future govemment to be put before the people at a national referendum”. It is in pursuance of The ob-jectives set forth in the fore-going order-in-couneil that the Newfoundland delegation has come to Canada. A previous delegation recently returned from London where they had been on a similar mission. On the north, the island is separated from the mainland by the Strait of Belle Isle, nine’miles wide at its narrowest point. On the South, Cabot Strait is about 60 miles wide at its narrowest point. The area of the island is about 42,000 square ’ miles — larger t han Ireland’s and about 84 per cent that of the com-bined area of Canada’s three Maritime provinces. The sover-eignty of Newfoundland also extends to some 110,000 square miles of Labrador on the mainland. The population, which has been increasing relatively quickly, is about 315,000 with an additional 5,500 in Labrador. Close to 90% of Newfoundland^ people live on the coast, in some 1,300 communities scattered along the 6,000 miles of shoreline. About 45% of the population are on the Avalon Peniirsula in the south-east, with some 60,000 in St. John’s, the Capital, and its suburbs. With little immigration into Newfoundland during the past century, about 98.5% of the population are native-born and possess a distinctive national character. (In Canada the per-centage of native bom is 82.4 per cent.) The principal racial groups are English (about 60 percent), Irish (25%), French and Scottish. The principal re-ligious groups are Roman Cath-olic (32.5%), Church of England (32%), United Church of Canada (26.2%), an Salvation Army (6.2%). For many years prior to 19-34 Newfoundland enjoyed Dominion status within the British Commonwealth. The impact of the depression, and related circumstances, however, had already left the country facing precarious economic plight and political disturbance. After an appeal to the United Kingdom, a Royal Commission advised steps to abandon responsible govemment and substitute in its place a commission govern-ment appointed by the Crown. At the same time the United Kingdom undertook to guaran-tee Newfoundland’s public loan commitments to the extent of some $74,000,000. Trade relations, however, out-strip in importance any issue raised by the public debt. Can-nada’s economy is closely in-terwoven with that of the island colony, and, in terms of volume, trade between the two countries is as great as our
