Enligt ett Washingtonmedde-lande har Sverige uppförts på listan över europeiska länder med krisläge, vilket tydligen innebär att det inrangerats bland länder som ej kan klara sin försörjning. Tilldelningen från Internationella livsmedels-rådet brukar lämnas för tiden 1 juli — 30 juni. Sverige begärde förra sommaren en tilldelning på 100,000 ton vete för att täcka konsumtionsbehovet fram till 1 september 1947. Omsider kom meddelandet att landet preliminärt tilldelats en kvot på 59,000 ton vete för tiden till 1 juli 1947. Av denna kvantitet har emellertid inte mer än 9,000 kunnat införas från U.S.A. Man hyser ganska goda förhoppningar om att de återstående 50,000 ton skall komma under sommaren. I annat fall skulle läget bli bekymmersamt.
Även för det kommande året måste Sverige i stor utsträckning lita till importen. Den svåra vintern och andra faktorer har gjort att landet har 38 proc, mindre höstsäd än 1946. För nästa år kan man, med nuvarande relativt låga ransoner, räkna med en brist pä brödsäd på 200,000 — 250,000 ton. Denna brist skall man försöka få täckt genom import. Det är emellertid små utsikter för att brödransioneringen skall kunna slopas under 1948. Av de viktigare födoämnena är det för närvarande endast potatisen som ger anledning till ljusare syn på läget.

Och så måste vi berätta om Sverige. Vi är inga goda pro-pagandister. Vi måste dämpa deras entusiasm lite grand. Visserligen förstår vi att mycket av vad de säger, tror och tycker om Sverige, är att skriva på den ungerska artighetens konto, men det som sedan blir kvar är ändå väl starkt för en aldrig så självbetlåten folk-hemsmedlem.
Och så lämnar vi Egercsehi med tomt flak.

directions of the central author-jties. As the adequacy of the societies’ funds will depend not only on their size but also on the way they are managed, the necessity for finding ät least as capable management as the old societies enjoyed has been par-ticularly stressed.
With the exception of persons confined to institutions, all Swedish citizens will have to be insured in some local so- ’ ciety. Pending an investigation । however of what appears to in-volve injustice, wives will only : be insured through their husbands if their cash income does not exceed 1,000 kronor ($278). Here again the argument of simplicity has been strong, and there lis also the question of the ability (and willingness) to pay extra premiums for special housewives’ insurance.
Premium rates will not be elxactly the same in all local-ities, but will be so calculated as to keep each soeiety sol ven t together with the funds sup-plied by the government. As re-ferred to the new organization, likely average it has been work-ed out however that to obtain the basic compensätion of 3.50 kr. ($1) a day, regular mem-bers (i. e. those between 18 and 67 years of age, with an income of at least 600 kr. ($167) will have to pay a yearly premium of only 24 kr. ($6.70).
Persons between 16 and 18 years old, and those over 67, pay a premium of 16 kronor and receive 2 kronor ($0.55) in daily compensätion. A married man receives an additional com-pensation of 2 kronor a day if his wife is also insured, other-wise 1.50 kr. — also payable if the wife alone is sick. Com-pensation for each child is 50 öre. If a man with a wife and 3 children therefore falls sick, gets a daily compensätion of 3.50 plus 1.50 plus 1.50 or 6.50 ($1.80). This sum may be increased by paying higher premiums however to 8, 9.50 or 11 ' kronor, the extra premiums for this amounting to 15, 30 or 45
are needed: temporary ones, where children may stay until their own home problems are solved; permanent ones for children placed in the full guardiianship of the Children’s Aid Soeiety.
Remember too, that the Children’® Aid Soeiety arranges paymenit for room and board provides health and medica supervision.

Owing to its scope premiums to the individual will however be con-siderable lower than those the voluntary societies now have to charge — in the case of married couples being in fact prac-tically out in half.
As income taxation at the source has been introduced as from January 1, 1947, it is proposed to collect both sickness and unemployment insurance premiums via the tax forms. Unemployment insurance at present is organized along the same lines as sickness Insurance, i. e. by private societies With government support. Government aid has steadily increased, however, accounting since 1941 for about 55 per cent of the societies’ total outlays.
Employers have hitherto not borne dirqctly any of the costs of unemployment insurance.

Since its original publication in January, 19-36, it has gone through fifteen printings, mcluding the forth-eoming one. In preparing this latest edition Mr. Childs visited Sweden during the war and in the summer of 1946.
