“John Ericsson” f. d. “Kuhgs-holm” svå^t eldhärjat i New Yorks hamn.

Motorskeppet “John Ericsson”, numera i amerikansk ägo men tidigare tillhörig Svenska Amerikalinjen under namnet “Kungsholm”, har härjats av en våldsam brand under uppehållet i New Yorks hamn den 7 mars. Omfattande skador har tillfogats fartyget, och det är ovisst huruvida det kommer att repareras eller måste skrotas ned. Man betecknar branden som den våldsammaste sedan “Normandie” förstördes.
“John Ericsson” var på 20,-000 ton och byggd 1928 hos Blohm & Voss i Hamburg.

The heaviest single piece
of
air cargo to be flown across the Atlantic on a scheduled passenger airliner was carried to Sweden recently on a Scan-dinavian Airlines System plane. The shipment, a 1,400 Ib. elec-trical power supply panel, was sent by the Vang Process De-velopment Company here to the Sandviken Steel Works. Since SAS started service last year from New York to Copen-hagen, Oslo, and Stockholm,

“Our most serious economic worry is the low export level which, considering the fall in our monetary value, has not yet reached the pre-war stage”, Isaid Prime Minister Tage Erlander in a newspaper inter-view during his First official visit to Copenhagen since he assumed the premiership. “Cur-rency holdings have flowed out of the country, and since the beginning of last year our re-serves have fallen from 2.6 billions to about 1.8 billions of kronor. It is only necessary to reduce this sum a little bit more, and Sweden’s freedom of movement in International trade will become severely lim-' ited.”
Mr. Erlander säid in closing that Sweden’s economic diffi-culties should not, however, be exaggerated. The risk of an in-flationary trend can probable be met and mastered. Discus-sions are now in progress between the leaders of the various political. parties in order to try to stabilize the value of the krona.
The Russian steamer
“Dnjester”, which recently arrived in Stockholm from Leningrad with mixed cargo, was commanded by a woman, 38 year old Captain Anna Shetin-ia. The radio operator and one of the cooks also were women.
The emigration of youth
from the northernmost prov-ince of Norrbotten to the industrial cities in central and Southern Sweden is becoming a difficult problem for the authorities to solve. Last year 3,275 more persons left Norrbotten than moved into it.

Dödsolycka i skogen.
Magnus Utgard, en “buckfer” hos Western Forest Industries Camp i Lake Cowichan, blev i tisdags förra veckan dödad under arbetet av ett fallande träd.
Lawrence Veeberg,
hotellägare i Cranbrook, föll i fredags ned från andra våningen genom ett fönster på lasarettet där han var patient. Han avled två timmar senare. Veeberg var 61 år och född i Halmstad i Sverige. Han hade bott i Granbrook i 37 sfr. Närmast sörjande äro två döttrar, Ruth och Nita, båda i Vancouver.
Bröllop i Christina Lake.
Bröllop firades den 14 febr, i Christina Lake, då George M. Lucin från Rossland ingick äktenskap med Miss Vira Julia M. Johnson, dotter till Mr. och Mrs. Axel Johnson i Christina Lake. Mr. R. D. Fosberg från Trail var marskalk och Miss Anna Lucin var brudtärna. Efter vigseln intogs en bröllops-måltid med fruarna Johnson, Palm och Lucin som servetriser. De nygifta skola bosätta sig i Trail, B. C.

Soviet Union Mixed Choir of 125 voices, which was organ-ized in Moscow in 1943, has just concluded a three week’s tour in Sweden. The choir, which appeared without remun-aration, traveled under the au-spices of the Swedish Europ-ean Aid Fund.
Hot running water
in all Swedish apartment houses, except those where oil heat is used, has been shut off for the time beihg in order to conserve the stock pile of imported coal. The authorities hope to be able to pennit hot water again for one week in March and then to give a “hot water week” every third week. The prospects, howeveir, are very uncertåin, since the ice situation in the Skagerack continues to disrupt shipping.
Record catches
of herring, amounting in all to over one million kilograms, oa- almost 2,2:50,000 pounds, recently were brought to the Gothenburg fish market in one single day.
The abolishments
of the Count and Baron titles in Sweden was urged in a re-cent Riksdag address by Ture Norman, author and poet and a Social-Democratic member of the First Chamber. Inherit honors of this kind, argued Mr. Nerman, no longer prove any personal merit. In our demo-cratic times, he said, when the heirs to these titles are as de-mocratic as other citizens, they must consider them more of a nuisance than a privilege.
The export of wild
rabbits from the tSwedish island of Gotland, In the Baltic Sea, to Finland ana Great Brit-ain, has recently started. Form-erly considered a plague, tens of thöusands of these rabbits were killed annually, but the hunters found it difficult to dispose of them in large quant-ities. Recently, however, a co-operative stockyard in Visby, the capita!, sent a trial shipment of ten tons to Finland, where the succulent meat was much appreciated.

Förste bebyggaren i Brockington död.
Arthur August Holmstrom, den förste som slog sig ned Som bebyggare i Brockington, avled den 22 febr, efter en längre tids sjuklighet. Holmstrom var född i Bjurholm, Västerbotten, och emigrerade år 1888 till Minnesota. Samma år gifte han sig med Margareta Carolina Per-so. Är 1907 kom de till Brock-
ington. IHan efterlämnar hustru, en son, Sigfrid i Brockington; fyra döttrar, Mrs. Axel Strandberg i Beatty; Mrs. John Isberg i Dawson Creek, B. C.; samt Mrs. Otto Larson och Mrs. Helge Larson, båda i Brockington, dessutom en syster i U.S.A. och en broder i Sverige, förutom barn och barnbarn. Begravningen hölls från Brockington Mission Church. Bärare voro Raymond Strandberg, Cecil Fennell, Henry Fri-esen, Gunnar Nordin, Arne Nordin och Arvid Moen. Många och vackra blommor hade sänts till båren.

A home for tubercular
French children will be put up by the Swedish Red Cross, somewhere on the Riviera, Count Folke Bernadotte, president of the Red Cross, will soon leave for Nice to look for a suitable building. The Swedish Aid for Europé Fund has granted 200,000 kronor for the purpose.

Swedish motion picture äct-ress, whose latest film is “Where There is Life”, with Bob Hope, recently returned to the legitimate stage, on which she has not been seen for more than three years. She appeared
in a comedy, “Johnny”, with the Laguna Beach Players, and was warmly greeted by press and public.
Edgar Bergen,
of radio fame, recently cele-brated the tenth anniversary of his association with “Charlie McCarthy”, his famous dum-my. Mr. Bergen, whose parents were born in Sweden, will make a visit there this summer.
A new film version
of Selma Lagerlöfs novel, “The Story of Gösta Berling”, wlll be made by Wive-film in Stockholm. It has been made into a motion plcture only once before, in 1923, with Greta Garbo and Lars Hanson in the leading parts.
A Swedish zoological
expedition of six members, headed by Åke Holm and Bengt Lundholm of Uppsala Universi-ty, will investigate the fauna on Kilimandjaro and a number of other East African peaks, on which various animal species from earlier and more humid epochs have survived thanks to the cool mountain climate. The expedition is expected to leave next autumn and spend about a year in Africa.
Sweden's merchant
marine at the end of 1946 totaled 1,708,000 gross tons, or 108,000 more tons than the year before. When the war broke out in 1939 Sweden had a merchant fleet of 1,617,000 gross tons.
