Canada is a deniocratic coun-try. Every man and woman who is a Canadian Citizen can participate fully in its Government; each has the right and the freedom to help elect representatives of his own choice. There is no dictatorship of this or that party or this br that group which would force its will upon the community. There are no concentration camps or all powerfull secret police to ensure that any one Party will win elections or that the coun-try at large should tolerate any one particular Government. As far as Cangdians are concerned such things would be contrary to the principles of Democracy and human dignity. We value our liberty, we have been and are prepared to take up arms in its defence. Whöever be-comes a Canadian Citizen auto-matically becomes an heir to these freedoms, but he also as-sumes certain responsibilities towards this country. These are not heavy burdens but they must be clearly realized.
Canada expects that all citiz-ens will participate in the life of the community regardless of their racial origin, their religions convictions or their polit-ical views. Anyone who comes to Canada with the idea of set-tling here and starting a home and family should take the trouble to learn sonie basic facts about the country he has elected for his second father-land. One cannot be a good Citizen of Canada and yet remain ignorant of the principles o" Canadian democracy, of the
methods of deniocratic elections or liow Canada is govern-ed and its law made. Ilis indif-ference to community problems will do harm to himself and to his adopted country.
The younger generations has the advantage of being able to learn citizenship in school and where in addition to the regular curriculum, emphasis is put on such matters as public speak- i ing, parliajnentary procedure,' debate, etc, The older genera-1 tion, specially those who came 1 here past school age, have not i had such opportunities and they must look to other sourc-es for their instruction, Those
in larger cities can attend eve-ning courses in English and Canadian Citizenship arranged by the educational authorities, while others must rely on news-papers, textbooks and pamph-lets. Both sources of instruction can draw upon the Citizenship Branch at Ottawa for ap-propriate material.
The new Citizenship Act comes into effeet on the 1st of January, 1947, and stipulates that those who wish to acquire Canadian citizenship wlil be re-quired to show a certain degree of knowledge of matters relat-ing to Canadian civics, history, geography, economics, etc. It would be advisable if the elubs and reading rooms, notable in rural communities, arranged such citizenship courses not only for those seeking their citizenship papers but for all who wish to learn .something of history, of the system of government and or the privil-eges and duties of a Citizen. These courses will acquire particular importance when new

The British tanker ‘Helicina’ is to go on trials in October with her boilers fired by cracked asphalt, hitherto a waste produet. With the economies achieved her owners intend to improve erew accommodations. For example, each member of the erew will have a cabin for himself. The owners are also experimenting with other low grade fuels.
Mellan 2 och 3 miljoner kronor per år tar Leksands 8,248 invånare in på turister i form av betalning för logi, för mat och dryck, för slädskjutsar och skidvallning, för besök på konstsamlingar och gammelgårdar och för “turistminnen”, alltifrån extra prima plädar, som vävs i Hemslöjdens hus vid Norsgatan, till små träskor, som glödritats i Insjön elle< Gnosjö.
Det är alltså inte att undra på att nian jämför turistväsendet i socknen med “en industrianläggning av stora mått”. Denna jämförelse har gjorts i en skrivelse till landshövding Rasjön i Falun från Leksands-bor, som bemöter överklagandet av ett beslut i kommunalfullmäktige. Beslutet innebär, att kommunen satsar 50,000 kr. i det turisthotell, som planeras på Käringberget, en affär som man nu efteråt inte är enig om. Dels därför att mer än en Leksandsbo anser att ett stort modernt hotell med spriträttigheter innebär en flärd, som inte hör hemma i socknen, dels därför att hotellet i den utformning det fått på papperet inte är den lyckligaste formen. Det skulle bli en betongklump på Käringbergets sluttning, och den hiss, som skulle leda dit upp, skulle verka naturstörande. •
Ett erkännansvärt drag i Leksands turistväsende utgör den kontakt med bygdens liv och bygdens folk som man på ett par håll försöker skapa.
Långebergsgården inbjuder till exempel ofta den hembygds-kunnige folkskolläraren E. Olsson från Krökbacken, fotografen Anders Jonas och andra, | som spelar och berättar om । Leksand och lägger till rätta ' många av de vanföreställningar som “stockholmare’’ har om sockendräkter och fäbodliv.

Gas turbines may soon be driving United Kingdom ships. A Newcastle, England firm who took an important part in the development of turbo-electric machinery, have now extended their activities to the produc-tion of gas turbines. At present the firm is manufaeturing units designed for static installation but as Lloyd’s List points out: “The possibility of their applic-ation to marine propulsion at probably not very distant is ob-vious.”
