For a while this company remained alone in large-scale trading operations but graduajly a group of Canadi-ans, of both French and English -origin, began to compete with the English group and they organized to form the North West Company. This company included many of the coureurs-de-bois and the voyageurs and their descend-ants. It knew how to deal with the Indians and generally was in a better trading position than its rival — the H,udson’s Bay Co. The “North Westers” as they were called had the men who knew how to deal with the natives, but it did not have the financial resources which the English organization possessed. Competition for the exclush e marketing of furs caused the price to fall rapidly. Soon profits became almost nil. In their efforts to persuade the Ind.ans to sell to them, the companies paid higher prices than evei before. They travelled deeper an ddeeper into the Indian territory to be there before their competitors, and sometimes they attacked the trading-posts of their rivals.
