Everywhere one goes now in Europé, the conversation tums sooner or jater to the question of coal, and coal is an absorb-ing topic in Sweden also. There are no coal mines in this coun-try. Germany contrived to deliver a large part of Sweden’s coal requirements all during the war, but there have been no deliveries from Germany since last February. Here again the Swedes pro-claim the advantages of the neutrality which has kept them more or less independent of Al- coal, and they did so because they were not bound—like small members of the United Nations—by the Allied policy toward Poland. Other small countries were not permitted to recognize the original Lub-lin government until that government had been changed to satisfy the British and American sensibilities- But the Swedish government promtly ex-changed representatives with the first postwar Polish government and negotiated the coal contract, providing for a-bout one sixth of their needs, before other small nations an ally in the highest council förlorat nästan hälvten av sin handelsflotta eller en halv miljon bruttoton. Although the Swedish government agreed after V-E Day to put all its merchant ships into the Allied pool, it stipulated, because of its neutrality, that no Swedish ships should be used for military traffic. The result has been that regular Swedish ship schedules were up to South America, forging new trade links. The There shortage because Unhappy Medium has been an acute of labor in Sweden the army—although it never fought a battle—required the constant mobilization of between 200,000 and 400,000 men for protective purposes, with 600,000 troops in the field during the two crises of April, 1940, and February, 1942. Additional thousands of men were used in the forests, since abnormal amounts of wood were required to replace coal and gasoline. The Swedish army can be demobilized rapidly, a simple process since its soldiers are all at home, but the forests will demand abnormal labor for some time to come. There is no prospect that Sweden can get its normal fuel require- ments from years. Although Swedes face abroad for some the majority of their future with much more confidence than is apparent in most of Europé, there is some dark talk here about impending political strug-gles. This sturdy Scandinavian country has been trying to follow “the middle way” in 'politics and economics, seeking some compromise between traditional conservatism and to-talitarian radicalism. But the middle way often is the hard-est way, and that is especially true during world-wide up-heavals produced by revolutions and wars. Swedes have been swinging to the left for generations, and they have dis-covered that the process need not be too painful, so long as it is kept under the control of the moderates. Sweden has been governed by moderate i Socialists for a long time. Now General Aueraqe .30 oz. /aort. Shares at t A A ... < \. The recent finding of a high-grade vein adds additional weight to the possibilities. Mapping and surveying is now progressing, the result of which will be made available from time to time.
