The Swedish Red Cross need hardly to be mentioned, being well-known all over the world for its many relief actions in various countries, both during the pust and the present war. in addition to its other activities, it is organiz-ed to supplement the ordinary medical service of the Swedish Army. It has at present at its dis-posal a trained personnel of 30.-000 persons, of whom the major-ity are women. There are further the Swedish Blue Star 4fornlerly the Red Star), which has assum-ed the task of training women to tend wounded and sick horses and other animals, as well as to provide equipment for such work.
A most important function is filled by the Voluntary Rifle Movement, in which hundred of thousands of Swedes of all ages are members and which has con-tributed greatly to uphold and im-prove the shooting skill of the Swedes. In recent years and espe-cially during last winter the afflux of marksmen to the shooting grounds was very large.
Still another and, in respect of membership, perhaps, the largest movement, is the A.R.P. Service, which comprises no less than over half a million trained men and women. This movement is, how-ever, not entirely voluntary, as in recent times the A. R. P. Service has largely been organized along ’ compulsory lines.
The Swedish voluntary defence organizations are undoubtedly a 1 factor of considerable importance i to the Swedish Defence, which is i also evidenced by the circum-
