SPONGBERG. n THREE DAUNTLESS LEADERS ARISE. The impetus to that political movement, which was destined to completely re-vamp Swedens eco-nomic and political structure, was given by August Palm and his early co-workers: Hjalmar Bran-ting, a young astronomer, and Axel Danielson, a university-trained newspaperman and student of sociology. Palm was born February 5th, 1849, in the parish of Salerup, province of Scania, and was ap-prenticed to a tailor at the age of ten. Upon becoming a journty-man, he visited Germany and Denmark, to perfect himself in his trade. He joined the Danish social democratic party in 1871. That year witnessed the rise of the Third French Republic and the birth of its campaign song, “The International , whose power ful appeal may be gauged by this stanza, translated into English: “Bebo d them seated in their glory The kings of minc ard mill and toiL What Lave you read in all their story, But how they plirndered Toil. Frjits of the people’s work are buri ed In Lie strong coffers of a few. In voting for their restitution, The man will only ask their due.” । ter of a populär tune, it was im-I mediate y identified as the cam-: paign song for the movement. One i stanza reads as follows in iree English trans ation: “True sons of labor, lets join together | With our brethren in south and in north. i List’, how triumphant the shouts of deliverance | are being heard through the breadth of the earth. I Rise from the bondage that bölds you in chains, ; March with the purpose to set yourselves free. Long has the yoke of our masters oppressed us, Kept us bowed down in shame and despair. । We a return of our rights are demanding, Fighting for justice and freedom and bread." Paper Became a Daily. The seed quickly sprouted, and in a short while, the Social-demo-kraten became a daiiy, reaching an ever-increasing number of workingmen's tenements with Clarion cal s to action. Palm with-, drew, in 1 886, from the editorial ; field and was succeeded by two men, raised for the herculean task ! by inscrutable Destiny: Axel Da nrelson and Hjalmar Branting. Both had scholastic background , and were elever writers and e o- UNG HJÄLTE 14-ÄRIG FÄNRIK. During his traveis in Europé, Fhlm had studied the tenets of Marx, who foretold "the impend-ing struggle of the expropriated feiany agamst the appropriating few,” to use an expression by H. G. Wells. In the fall of 1881, Palm re-turned to Sweden, and in Malmö, the nation s third largest city, de- I livered his first propaganda .talk i on November 6th. Up to that time, this date was religiously ob-served, because it commemorated the death of King Gustavus Adol-phus on the battlefield of Lutzen in 1632. With the re-entry of August Palm into Sweden, the awakening of the workingmen got an auspici-ous start. He traveled from place t© place and preached the gospel of trade imionism. He was the Paulus of the Swedish labor movement, a messenger heralding the advent of a better day. On several . occasions he was jailed, but con- i finement in durance vile did not kill his ardor. Urged Consumer Co-ops. Palm, in his unpretentious way, interpreted the sequences of his-tory, from the protetarian view-point, according to Marx. Being also familiar with the writings of Ferdinand Lasalle, he advocated self-help through the formation of consumers' cooperatives. In 1 885, the dynamic agitator reached Stockholm, the Capital, where be and some friends pooled their resources to start the paper "Social-Demokraten" (The Social Democrat). Their combined capitai totaTed 1 08 kronor, or about $25 in American money. The first issue left a primitive handpress on September 25th. Palm had wriiten his editorials in a little tailorshop on the south side, alternating with repair-work in his vocation, to keep the wolf from the family door. He peddled the paper himself on the. . streets and caused great commotion.
